`Sometimes, you cut out 30 seconds and physically you may have lost only 30 seconds but in headspace as an audience you quicken the pace of the film much more than those 30 seconds,` said Aamir Khan, while he explained the deleted scene from his blockbuster directorial debut Taare Zameen Par. It obviously made no difference whatsoever with the final cut as the film, by itself, was nothing short of mesmerising. And now with this special edition DVD we find more reasons to celebrate this landmark movie. The loo bullyThis happens right after the Maths test in which Ishaan has successfully (in his own definition) cracked the great `nine times three mystery`. The answer, according to the genius, is three. But that tiny moment of victory is shattered. A senior later rags him near the school water-cooler, calling him a `duffer`. But Ishaan—rather than keeping quiet—tricks the bully with a sleight he had picked up the previous day.Ishaan watches TVAfter he gets yelled at for the homework fiasco, a very angry Ishaan sits down for TV and flips channels randomly until he reaches one which has a drummer performing. The furious action resonates with Ishaan and a mix of emotions dance violently on the child`s face. Darsheel`s performance is brilliant and the mix of emotions—potent.Ishaan criesDiwali brings no fun into Ishaan`s life as he hugs his elder brother for comfort. The mind is tired and the child is hurt—the festival of lights doesn’t do anything to alleviate the darkness that descends on him when he realises he is being sent away. A beautifully shot sequence as Ishaan continues to stare into the blackness of the night.High jump TZP`s intended title was High Jump. Aamir explains that the title was to signify the eradication of fear surrounding studies. And, true to this context, the scene where Ishaan conquers high jump practice was shot, but soon removed at the editing table because Aamir felt the scene had lost its power.Family at restaurantThe family arrives to meet Ishaan at the boarding school in Panchgani. The dinner scene is one of the most choking moments in the film where the parents sit down for food and Ishaan refuses to eat despite his mother`s constant pushing. Daddy thinks it`s another one of the child`s attention-seeking tricks and mum continues with the urging. There is so much tension that it`s almost tangible.Nikumbh`s houseOur first look into Nikumbh sir`s house—filled with Sufi music and not quite like a humble teacher`s home. Spacious with rich tiles and high-tech gadgets, the shot looked very far from what Nikumbh portrayed on-screen and Aamir Khan certainly took the right decision by chopping the extravagant shots out.Ranjit bullies IshaanThe bully has a go at the `genius`. This is where Ranjit beats up Ishaan for not throwing the ball in the right direction. Darsheel sneezed during the original shot which Aamir found funny and included in the bonus material. The final cut, however, never had the sneezing in it. ... read more »
