Girl power ruled this weekend as "Sex and the City" fashioned a surprisingly strong opening at the North American box office with women accounting for 85 percent of its audience. The movie, based on the groundbreaking HBO television series of the same name, was also the top choice in Britain and Germany. In the United States, the film earned 56 million dollars million over the weekend, easily beating the expectations and in the process toppling the action adventure flick "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" which slipped to No. 2, although it did retain the No. 1 spot overseas. "It was a huge surprise that "Sex in the City" did so well," explains Reuters Bob Tourtelotte. "It did 56 million dollars (USD) and it was only expected to do 30 to 35 million dollars. The film was also expected to finish second to "Indiana Jones." But, the women of "Sex in the City" came out on top." There was nothing scary about the weekend results for "The Strangers." The low budget horror flick starring Liv Tyler kicked off at No. 3 with a take of 21 million, way better then expected. ""Sex in the City" is geared toward an adult mature audience made up of women," added Tourtelotte. "The Stranger" is made for men in their 20's who are looking for freights and thrills."
