Mumbai sessions court today (May 28) overruled the previous order by a lower court and upheld Sajay Dutt and Manyata's marriage. The lower court had earlier ruled that Manyata had not obtained a divorce from her first husband --Meeraj-ur-Rehman--and therefore could not marry Sanjay Dutt. Contrary to the lower court's ruling Mumbai sessions court has declared their marriage valid. The sessions court has ruled that Manyata is legally divorced and can marry again.
Sanjay Dutt and Manyata had a court marriage in Goa on Feb 7 2008. The marriage later faced legal issues as it was said to be in violation of Muslim Personal Law (MPL). According to legal experts, a Muslim woman cannot marry a man of any other religion unless she converts herself to the religion of her would-be husband or vice-versa.
According to sources being a Muslim by birth, there is no proof that Manyata converted to Hinduism before marrying Dutt, except for the fact that she had earlier adopted a Hindu name.
In addition to the issues with the MPL, Manyata's former husband Meeraj-ur-Rehman had also moved a petition in a Bandra Magistrate's court stating that his marriage to Manyata had not been dissolved.
Sanjay Dutt on court verdictAfter Mumbai Sessions court passed the verdict, a visibly beaming actor Sanjay Dutt told the media, "I am very happy, I have full faith in the Judiciary. I have full faith in the people of my country. I just want to thank everybody. Manyata is also very happy, everyone's blessings has come to fruition. On behalf of her, I also want to thank everybody."Click here to listen to Sanjay Dutt ... read more »
