Legendary entertainer Bob Hope's "favourite things" to be sold in auction to raise money for charity foundation. Bob Hope's daughter says, "I think it is the thought that these things will find a new home that people will hopefully love and cherish like Dad did." "It will be a bittersweet thing to see these things go. But, happy to know that these are going to be in the hands of people that treasure them like Dad did.""The growth and the whole excitement of what happened in during the last century is really embody in dad's life. He was lucky enough and very grateful to have been a part of all of that." Bob Hope's legendary career is literally a history of Hollywood itself, from Vaudeville to Broadway and then onto radio, television and film. Now, five years after his death at age 100, nearly everything in the comedian's Los Angeles home office will be sold in an auction that is expected to gather between 200,000 and 400,000 U.S. dollars (USD) for charity. Hope's daughter, Linda, who gave Reuters a tour of his office, says the sale is what her dad wanted.Among the some 700 items up for sale, is Hope's personal desk, where he spent much of his time, when he wasn't on the golf course, working on his jokes. Of course, the comedian's well known love affair with golf makes up a big part of the collection. Hope's bag and clubs are expected to garner a lot of interest. There is also a set of tea knives and forks from Queen Elizabeth that was a personal favourite of entertainer. As a comedian, his most famous films were a series of "road" movies with Bing Crosby. Hope would come to be know as much though for his work as a patriotic American whose wartime shows entertained soldiers from World War II to the Persian Gulf."The growth and the whole excitement of what happened during the last century is really part of my in dad's life. He was lucky enough and very grateful to have been a part of all of that," Linda said. Through the Bob and Dolores Hope Charitable Foundation, the sale organised by Julien's Auctions will benefit veterans groups. It's set to take place on October 18 and 19th in Beverly Hills. Fans will get a chance to see the memorabilia up close by cruising on the Queen Mary 2, an ocean liner named after a ship Hope performed aboard in 1939.(Agencies) ... read more »
