The Bollywood superstar -- Shahrukh Khan -- is certainly over the moon these days as not only did his production venture 'Om Shanti Om' (OSO) receive an overwhelming response at the Berlin Film Festival but the actor was also lauded by the German media. Interestingly, King Khan's popularity in Europe was compared with famous footballer Michael Ballack by the German media.
Shahrukh, who received a spontaneous and emotional welcome by the Germans on his visit to the Berlin Film Festival, was touched by their affection and appreciation towards him and said :" I don't think poems, paintings and cinema should be understood, they should be felt. Last night, I felt that what I believe in is completely true. They were people who don't understand my language, my culture, where I come from or where I'm going but they were feeling. This clearly implies that the film 'OSO' speaks about celebration of life, happiness, dancing, singing and feeling a little sad too." Reports also suggest that the tickets for the film 'OSO' were sold out in an unprecedented less than seven minutes. The rapturous Shahrukh himself was surprised with the amount of recognition and reception he recieved in Berlin. Infact, the German media person also stated that Shahrukh Khan is as popular as one of the biggest footballer's -- Michael Ballack -- in Germany. Shahrukh, who is surely overwhelmed by this unpredictable popularity said: " I spoke to my son and told him that people knew me nearly as much as we know Ballack back in Mumbai or Romi Nagar. However, he found it unbelievable and replied that I couldn't be so famous in Germany."
Sharukh also mentioned that he was totally overwhelmed with the kind of response he got from the Germans saying that he was hugged everywhere in the world but the warmest that he ever got was from the Germans.
Despite an enviable fan following abroad, Shahrukh seems more keen on taking Indian cinema to global audiences instead of trying to pave a career path for himself in Hollywood. Shahrukh, who is proud of the fact that Bollywood has gained recognition in the international arena said:" I realised this on the red carpet that there are so many people feeling so well and warm towards the cinema we do in India. So, I am thrilled that I came to Berlin and now it has become very important. I will go home and tell everyone that whatever it may take to get to Berlin, please go because people love us there."
Shahrukh is sure to be thrilled with the amount of popularity and power he seems to command from the world. Well Shahrukh isn't called the Badshah of Bollywood without a reason. ... read more »
